Annual AMILA Islamic Art Fair: November 12, 2000

The 2nd AMILA Islamic Art Fair will take place on Sunday, November 12th from noon-6pm at the San Francisco Arab Cultural Center, 2 Plaza Ave., at the corner of Plaza and Laguna Honda in San Francisco. This juried exhibit will showcase original ceramics, photography, calligraphy, textiles, paintings, computer graphics, and tile mosaics by Bay Area Muslim artists. Highlights will include works by nationally-acclaimed Palestinian photographer Said Nuseibeh, hand painted ceramics by award-winning Algerian artist Khalil Bendib, and contemporary paintings. Works are on sale.

The artwork, created by American-born Muslims, recent converts and immigrants, represents the changing demographics among Muslims in the region. "Muslims in the Bay Area have only recently achieved the size to develop cultural offerings that fuse traditional Islamic arts with contemporary American styles," says Moina Noor, AMILA Art Fair coordinator. "This display of the arts represents the visibility and vibrancy of the Bay Area Muslim Community."

"Muslims come from a splendid tradition of artists, craftspeople, textile makers and calligraphers who through their art glorified God and Islam. It is our intent to continue and stimulate this tradition here in California," says Noor.

The event is sponsored by American Muslims Intent on Learning and Activism, an eight year old organization serving the spiritual, political, social, and educational needs of Bay Area Muslims.

Admission is $5 at the door.
